POSITION TITLE: Associate Director, Health Brain Initiative
REPORTS TO: Director, Healthy Brain Initiative
STATUS: Full Time Exempt
LOCATION: Washington, D.C.
The Associate Director of the Healthy Brain Initiative (HBI) is responsible for advancing and developing key state public health policy issues related to actions in the HBI Road Map, monitoring trends, and providing technical assistance to public health professionals to advance the priorities of the National HBI Cooperative Agreement with the CDC. The Associate Director will also support the development of HBI Road Map materials with subject matter experts and partners. The successful applicant will manage projects from start to finish and will collaborate across the Association and with select external partners. This individual will also represent the Association, as directed, in national collaborations related to HBI projects.
This position reports to the Director, Healthy Brain Initiative and is based in Washington, DC with estimated travel up to 15%.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate initiatives to provide technical and capacity-building support to governmental public health agencies and their partners in the implementation of the Healthy Brain Initiative (HBI) Road Maps and other activities of the National HBI Cooperative Agreement with the CDC.
- Identify, research, and analyze emerging and evolving public health-related policy matters that would advance HBI priorities in the Road Map series, then develop written and verbal policy analyses on the public health policy issues.
- Advance the collection of public health surveillance data, including through the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), and the use of these data to inform state government plans, priorities, and policies.
- Develop accurate, clear, and compelling communications and materials for target audiences and application in public health practice.
- Support the evolution of HBI Road Map series with day-to-day process management; coordinating with designated subcontractors, partners, and subject matter experts; editing draft sections; and contributing to marketing to public health officials.
- Manage logistics and communications associated with in-person or virtual events, such as meetings, teleconferences, and webinars.
- Assist in the development, management and maintenance of a system to track nationwide implementation of Road Map actions.
- Manage day-to-day interactions with one or more HBI contractors and with designated national partners.
- Identify and resolve problems in a timely and effective manner, identify opportunities to improve the impact of the HBI, and contribute to long-term strategic planning for the National HBI Cooperative Agreement.
- Present on behalf of the HBI department at national conferences and at meetings, and represent the Association with select external partnerships.
- Strong policy research and analytical skills, including proven ability to synthesize complex or diverse information.
- Significant knowledge of public health interventions at the policy, system, and environmental levels, including Medicaid.
- Superior written and oral communications skills, including representing an organization with confidence and polish and distilling the essence of complex issues.
- Track record of effective project management, including in periods of high-work volumes and tight deadlines.
- Team-player with demonstrated ability in customer service and interpersonal relations.
- Knowledge of and experience with applying health equity frameworks in public health policy and practice.
- Bachelor’s degree in public health, public policy, or a related discipline; master’s degree strongly preferred
- Minimum 5-7 years of progressive professional experience, including service in both public health organizations and in government agencies (or advocacy groups)
- At least 1 year of prior experience with health education and health promotion with populations that have been traditionally underserved preferred
- Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed for the job
- Ability and willingness to travel up to 15%
