What the Director, IT Managed Services does

The Director, IT Managed Services position is key in assisting AGU to accomplish its mission of promoting discovery in Earth and Space science for the benefit of humanity by being both strategic and operational in focus.

The Director, IT Managed Services is responsible for a high-performing computing infrastructure of AGU, including but not limited to planning and management of enterprise computer support, hardware, network operations, cloud services, help desk, cybersecurity, and system and software training for staff.

Reporting to the CFO & Senior VP of Human Resources, the Director will be developing AGU’s infrastructure strategy and driving through to execution and support.

* Serves as a senior subject matter expert for technology infrastructure and security offerings, managed IT services, IT project services and platform services.
* Leads the development and implementation of new information technology products and services, improvements to systems, through appropriate research, vendor selection, and development activities, in partnership with the appropriate divisional departments.
* Oversees service management activities including change and release management, testing, quality assurance and end-to-end technical integration of enterprise information technology.
* Establishes, maintains and executes operations procedures that leverage efficiencies and best practices.
* Implements and maintains controls and monitoring procedures to ensure confidentiality, integrity and availability of critical systems.
* Responsible for ensuring that the current and future information technology needs of AGU are adequately met.
* Coordinates with Chief Digital Officer to ensure that public-facing digital technologies are aligned with enterprise IT.
* Responsible for efficient, effective, and on-budget partnership with the outsourced IT Managed Services vendor.
* Responsible for establishment of the information security function.
* Develops and oversees policies and standards for cybersecurity protections on all IT infrastructure resources.
* Oversees support of AGU telecommunication and audio-visual (AV) systems; collaborates with the technical staff of AGU Conference Center Services, as needed.
* Develops and conducts systems, software and cybersecurity training for AGU staff.
* Conducts quarterly IT infrastructure assessments and presents findings to the CFO & SVP of HR.
* Partners with the CFO & SVP of HR on aligning IT Managed Services strategic and operational plans with AGU’s business plan.
* Responsible for the budget of the IT Managed Services department.
* Other duties as assigned.

What the Director, IT Managed Services brings to the team

* 10+ years with Bachelor’s degree; or 8+ years with Master’s degree in computer science, information technology or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Previous experience in IT Help Desk management is strongly preferred.
* Experience supervising IT consultants is a must.
* Experience with infrastructure implementation and management projects is a must.
* Experience managing budget is required.
* Previous experience working in a membership organization environment preferred.
* Excellent computer skills including strong understanding of project management software is a must.
* Excellent analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills, as well as a demonstrated ability to simultaneously control numerous projects.
* Strong leadership skills and the ability to communicate easily and effectively with technical and non-technical audiences, including scientists and senior executives of AGU, vendor partners, and staff.
* Must be collaborative in nature, utilizing exceptional listening and facilitation skills to build effective teams, drive effective outcomes and to develop innovative solutions that meet the needs of multiple stakeholders.
* Ability to plan, organize, train, evaluate and direct work of assigned staff.
* Report preparation and research skills.
* Excellent time management skills and ability to multitask.
* Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and anticipate the needs of a changing landscape.
* Ability to exercising highest level of discretion and sensitivity on both internal and external confidential matters.
* Ability to travel.
