What the Individual and Major Gifts Fundraiser does

The Individual and Major Gifts Fundraiser position is key in assisting AGU to promote discovery in Earth and Space science for the benefit of humanity by being the frontline representative of AGU in fundraising from individual donors at all financial levels.

Reporting to the Manager, Development Operations and Donor Stewardship, the incumbent in this role will hold primary responsibility for individual and major gifts fundraising from $1,000 - $10,000.

* Manages and grows a fundraising portfolio of existing and prospective major donors which enables AGU to create and support major initiatives including AGU Strategic Fundraising priorities and special fundraising opportunities.
* Responsible for meeting budgeted financial goals related to fundraising from individual and major donors. These efforts include events, in-person cultivation and solicitation meetings.
* In partnership with the Manager, Development Operations and Donor Stewardship, develops, coordinates and executes cultivation strategies and creates unique donor reports as appropriate for the solicitation and continued stewardship of individual and major donors.
* Coordinates and advances Individual Giving program efforts including new donor acquisitions and renewal efforts.
* Responds to donor inquiries in a timely and professional manner while always keeping a mind to moving them into the development pipeline.
* Supports the Manager, Development Operations and Donor Stewardship as requested in the establishment of new donor funds, awards or scholarships.
* Works in partnership with the Manager, Development Operations and Donor Stewardship to maintain and expand membership in the Legacy Society.
* Maintains a strong, positive, productive and professional relationships internally with AGU Staff and volunteers and externally with AGU donors and prospects to ensure that Development projects run smoothly and provide the most benefit to AGU’s needs.
* Other duties as assigned.

What the Individual and Major Gifts Fundraiser brings to the team

* Bachelor’s degree is required in English, Writing, Communications, Business or similar major, and 3-5 years of demonstrated and increasing experience in fundraising or related field.
* Ability to travel. Extended working hours and travel (up to 50%) may be necessary.
* Track-record initiating successful individual/annual fund fundraising campaigns with a proven strength in persuasive writing for a digital audience.
* Experience in researching foundation and non-tradition funding streams preferred.
* Experience in managing and driving multiple components of larger projects.
* High-level database management and fundraising software experience required; experience with netForum preferred.
* Thoughtful and dynamic professional with an ability to approach problems in a solution-oriented manner; driven self-starter.
* Strong individual/annual fund fundraising track-record with emphasis on persuasive writing for a digital audience.
* Ability to project a professional demeanor while interacting with donors, colleagues and others.
* Demonstrated initiative and sound judgment, and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
* Ability to work within the scientific community and communicate science to a non-scientific community.
* Ability to communicate clearly, easily and effectively with coworkers, scientists, researchers, and donors.
* Ability to multitask, effectively prioritize and work well under pressure to meet sensitive project deadlines.
* Proficiency in fundraising databases and Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
* Demonstrated strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
* Ability to demonstrate accuracy and quality of work in a fast pace work environment.
* Must be capable of exercising highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters.
