SOME, Inc. is seeking a Food Service Worker (Cook) to join the team most recently recognized for serving 900 meals everyday! The Cook is one of the most important positions at SOME, Inc. because serving meals is at the heart of our organization.
Position Description: The Cook prepares daily meals for breakfast, lunch, and the meals for delivery to programs. Maintains kitchen operations and food inventory.
Required: HS Diploma or GED; 1-3 yrs. food service or restaurant experience.
Required License/Certifications: CPR/First Aid; Food Handler's License by the District of Columbia Department of Health & ServSafe Certification; Driver's license is required
Preferred: Culinary Arts Degree; 3 + yrs. institutional food service or restaurant experience.
Schedule: 6:00am - 2:30pm (Monday - Friday) - 40 hours/week *essential employee*
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of kitchen operations and food preparation techniques
- Knowledge of food safety
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Time management skills with the ability to prioritize
- Customer service skills to interact with volunteers and coworkers
- Ability to read and understand menus and recipes
- Able to utilize kitchen equipment and tools
- Ability to follow directions
- Flexibility with the ability to multi-task despite competing priorities
- Organized with an attention to detail
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- May be required to stand for long periods.
Meal Preparation: Develop weekly menu and plan breakfast and lunch with selections that are balanced and nutritious. Plan economical use of resources and meal portion size. Track and plan food budget Adjust menus based on donations. Ensure meals are ready each day for delivery to programs.
Organization: Clean and maintain kitchen. Organize and maintain food inventory. Label meals for serving and delivery. File invoices from deliveries. Record daily logs for food, refrigeration, temperature of foods, etc.
