The Society for Neuroscience (SfN) is looking for a Policy & Advocacy Fellow that will help provide staff support for special and on-going projects, providing the critical perspective of someone with skills and training typical of the SfN membership. The fellow will be a graduate student or early career neuroscientist with a strong interest in public policy or a career path outside the traditional academic or laboratory environment. This is a temporary position not to exceed 6 months (preferably September - March). The Fellow will be involved in:
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Provide scientific perspective on core department functions including advocacy for federal research funding and animals in research.
- Assist with the implementation of strategic initiatives as directed by the Committee on Government on Public Affairs and the Committee on Animals in Research.
- Help write scientific portions of testimony submitted by the Society's president to Congressional committees.
- Develop materials about the value of scientific research for BrainFacts.org, outreach campaigns (such as letters to the editor), and other public facing media.
- Develop multiple, regular newsletters for member-audiences on subjects addressing policy, advocacy, and animals in research.
- Assist AT staff in developing materials and preparing panel participants for the society's annual meeting (held in October or November).
- Assist AT staff in developing and preparing materials, schedules, and other necessary items for SfN's annual lobby event in Washington, D.C. (typically held in March).
- Participate fully in AT annual meeting and lobby event activities.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree required. Graduate level work in the field of neuroscience, Ph.D. strongly preferred.
- 1-2 or more years of experience working in a professional setting.
- Effective oral and written communication skills; outstanding interpersonal and customer service skills to interface with internal and external customers.
- Demonstrated interest in science advocacy
- Strong collaborative skills and ability to organize work across departments to achieve common objectives.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to multi-task and set priorities in a flexible manner to address changing needs.
- Advanced competence in computer software applications and related technology products, including database systems and proficiency in Windows, MS Office Suite, experience with content management system and association management system are a plus.
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment, and to exercise sound judgment.
