Job Description

Position Summary
The NP will be credentialed according to the medical staff regulations of the hospital in which they work.  The attending physician will be expected to see all patients and countersign all records and orders generated by NP
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  Other duties may be assigned.
  1. Performs evaluation and problem identification of patients.
  2. Performs history and physical examination of patients.
  3. Order and interpret laboratory data and radiological tests.
  4. Monitor patient status and response to treatments.
  5. Adequately document findings in the medical record.
  6. Recommend appropriate therapeutic interventions.
  7. Interact with consultants as appropriate.
  8. Provide education and counseling for patients.
  9. Order appropriate therapeutic interventions.
  10. Supervise health science and medical students as appropriate.
  11. Perform procedures for which practitioner is credentialed as dictated by patient need.
  12. Interact with nursing and technologist staff.
  13. Participate in the educational programs of the Department.
  14. Participate in Departmental quality assurance, risk management, and compliance efforts.

A Master’s degree in nursing, and successful completion of an accredited nurse practitioner program of study is necessary. Credentialed as an advanced practice nurse practitioner by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) or the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Current licensure as a registered nurse and advanced practice nurse in the District of Columbia is required. 
Two years of recent clinical experience as an advanced practice nurse practitioner. Experienced in general surgery is preferred.
Ability to input data into the computer, and analyze data as requested.  Must be able to communicate providing verbal feedback in a professional manner.  Must be able to follow and understand instructions, and react favorably in all work situations.  Must be mentally adaptable and flexible in dealing with a variety of people.
